The leather wrap on the handle feels broken-in right out of the box, no break-in period needed. Those side blades really do save your knuckles during lockups, which I didn't expect to matter until my first sparring session.
The side blades caught me off guard the first time I used them in a bind, they're way more useful offensively than I expected. Build feels solid in hand too, no wobble where the cross guard meets the main blade.
